78 deaths recorded as a result of a harsh cold wave in Afghanistan

New statistics reveal that at least 78 people have died due to extreme cold exposure in Afghanistan over the past nine days. The State Ministry for Disaster Management has collaborated with other governmental institutions to provide food and cash aid to at least one million people. However, many vulnerable families are still struggling with the drop in temperature and are unable to afford basic necessities such as firewood for heating their homes. The Meteorology Department has reported that the temperature this year has fallen unprecedentedly, with the coldest area being Ghor province where the temperature is 34 degrees below zero. The cold wave is expected to continue throughout next week. A number of Kabul residents have called for support from the government and aid organizations during this harsh winter.
