Israel Adesanya, a Nigerian-born New Zealand professional mixed martial artist, regained his middleweight title from his long-time opponent Alex Pereira with a stunning knockout in UFC 287 in Miami, Florida. The victory was a payback for the three previous defeats Adesanya suffered from Pereira in kickboxing and UFC fights. Gilbert Burns beat hometown favourite Jorge Masvidal by unanimous decision and called for a title fight with British welterweight champion Leon Edwards. Masvidal announced his retirement following a distinguished 20-year career that yielded 35 wins from 52 fights.
